If you’re lucky enough to own a boat here in beautiful coastal Georgia, you know it’s not just a toy—it’s a lifestyle. But whether you're pulling it out for the off-season or parking it while life gets busy, properly prepping your boat for long-term storage can make all the difference. At Chapin Storage Co., we’ve seen firsthand how a little maintenance now can save a whole lot of headaches later.
First things first, give your boat a good wash. Salt, dirt, and algae might not look like much, but over time they’ll wear down your finish and eat at your hardware. A thorough rinse with fresh water—including the trailer—is step one.
Next, drain and dry everything. We’re talkin’ bilges, livewells, the engine, the works. Moisture is the enemy in our humid Georgia climate, and mold can sneak up fast if you’re not careful. If you’ve got cushions or life jackets onboard, take ’em home or store them in a climate controlled storage unit.
When it comes to your engine and fuel system, don’t skip this: Add fuel stabilizer and run the motor for a few minutes to cycle it through. Fog the engine if it’s going to sit for several months. Disconnect the battery and store it separately, ideally in a cool, dry place.
Also, don’t forget the trailer. Check tire pressure, lube the wheel bearings, and chalk the wheels if you’re parking it long-term. It’s small stuff, but it keeps your trailer road-ready and your boat safely in place.
Finally, cover it up tight. A high-quality boat cover helps protect from dust, rain, bird droppings—and our strong Georgia sun.
At Chapin Storage Co., we provide secure, open-air boat storage with wide parking spaces, solid drainage, and easy access right off I-95. We're proud to serve the Kingsland community with southern hospitality and reliable self storage solutions.
